Stage's Thread of Adequate Sprites in Progress

I made sprites. I want to show my sprites. See my sprites. Blank

So first I have some entirely custom sprites of one of the Sky People from Kirby Triple Deluxe in Super Star/Ultra style.
Next I have Rick the Hamster from KDL2 in the same style.
But more recently, here's something not Kirby related: Rosalina as a character in SNES Mario 2.

So whadd'ya think? Good? Bad? Decent? Needs more salt? Eh?

I'm going to go ahead and post some pictures of various models I've made over the years. Some are crappy, and basic, some have textures, most don't, some are 'fan game' stuff, some of it is original content, and all of it was made by me, in Google Sketch-Up.

Zelda Stuff (Imgur album) -- be sure to look at the full-res images, if you want. There's a little gear in the upper right of each picture which allows you to do so.
Non-Zelda Stuff. Lots of concept stuff here (Imgur Album).

I'll post some non-3D stuff eventually, but probably in another forum cause this area is for 3D work, it seems. I have a lot of other 3D stuff too, like some Mario 64/ Metroid* stuff, among some other things. I have a lot of 2D Zelda maps as well.

* I was attempting to remake the world of Super Metroid in the 3D map style of the Prime games. I only got a small portion of Crateria done. I'll get together some more shots, if people are interested.

So, this section...

This is something I've been wanting to talk about for a long time. I've gone through each of the non-stickied threads that are displaying on the current page, and I've tallied up which threads fit into a few categories.

This is what I found:

Nintendo characters: .3 + .3 + .5 + .2 + .3 + .2 + .5 + .5 + 1 = 3.8
Popular mascot characters: .3 + 1 + .5 + .1 + .5 + 1 = 3.4
Typical guy/etc. with no real design: 1 + .1 + .3 + .2 + .6 + 1 =  3.2
Other: 1 + .3 + .6 + .7 + .3 + 1 + .6 + .4 + .5 = 5.4

Any "1" means that all the sprites in the thread on whatever page(s) I looked at fit into that category.
The decimal numbers represent the way I split the scores up when the sprites in a given thread matched more than one category.

That makes a ratio of 10.4:5.4, or almost 2:1 of the total of the top three categories vs. the "other" category

What does this ratio represent?

Well, the point I'm trying to make is how uninspired and lacking in personality the sprites in this subforum are.

How many times have you seen basic Nintendo or similar character sprites in the same dull style? How many times have you seen "guy with no theme who wears the plainest clothes?" Yes, it's nice to have fun doing whatever you want. Yes, you don't have to take art that seriously. Yes, a lot of you are still learning and want to stick with easy things. But still, the amount of stagnation here is astounding.

I have to force myself to even look at the sprites in this section, they're so boring. I can't imagine most passerbys would care to stop and look, either. Art is a lot more fun when there's some vigor between you and the people you share it with. If you just want to make sprites that can only elicit a "meh," then I have no idea why you even do it at all.

Besides the audience, this section isn't good for the artists, either. I feel like this place breeds laziness and a lack of enthusiasm. Like, this is seriously a rotten place to try to be an artist, no matter how serious you are about it.

I think that influence is a very important thing to manage as an artist, and when you're stuck in a culture with a bunch of people of who don't have the guts to try something new or who don't have the guts to design a character that requires some actual personal input, then how can you improve? Trying a no-brainer sprite every once in awhile is fine, but seriously, where is the ambition?

Where are the animations? Where are the scenes? Where is the style experimentation? Where are the larger sprites? Where are the color studies? Where are the mockups? Where are the actual character designs? Where is anything?

It all makes me pretty sad. I feel like being here is making people forget that there's a much larger world of art to enjoy, and that you don't have to be stuck having a mediocre amount of fun as a pigeonholed artist who can't do anything. You can actually have the heart to learn how to make things that are worth making if you just gain the ambition to try new things. I don't want to keep seeing this stupid generic crap over and over again. It just doesn't do much for anybody.

Yeah, technical improvement is good, but that's not even my main point here. Learning the basics is very important, but seriously, what good are they if you keep making subject matter that's not interesting?

Think about the sprites that excite you. Is it the contextless renditions of characters standing idly that you've seen 10,000 times? I suspect that's probably not the case.

Is it the screenshots of games that have an ambient world? Is it the lively characters that bounce around and make you smile? Is it the intensity of fighting games, or the variety of enemies in platformers, or even the experiments of your peers online? Whatever it is, you can do all that too. Not right away, no, but you're never going to get there if all you do is play it safe and act uninterested.

Please, if I'm allowed to ask, please put more effort into what you're doing. I'm sick of coming here and watching people squander their potential. It feels like the people here don't even realize that they have potential to begin with. I don't care if art is your life or art is your hobby, just have the guts to make something that's enjoyable.

Shovel Knight .ANB File Format

$

Hey there!

I've been busy the past week or so figuring out the file formats for WayForward's games. Now, it turns out that Shovel Knight was made by a branch-off company from WayForward, and they use similar technology. Namely, similar .anb files, which are where the sprites are located.

I took a brief glance at the file format some time ago, without realizing that it was indeed the same format. In fact, the YCLZ compression headers I found were just renamed WFLZ headers... like are in most modern WayForward titles.

Since the sendspace links in that thread are dead now, and I appear to have misplaced the .anb's that I downloaded and looked at before, anybody mind sending me some .anb's to look at? (Or some .pak files and I can extract them myself). Some .tex files, if there are any, would be swell also, so I can double-check that that format's the same, too. For now, Shovel Knight's sitting in my Steam wishlist, waiting for the Summer Sale like all the other WayForward titles...

If anybody wants to package the sprites up into sheets, that's swell too. If not, I'd need all the .anb files and I can sheet them myself.

Thanks!

Whoa Omega is making a sprite thread?? I know!

Welcome to my topic, in here I am going to be showcasing sprites I'm creating for a Mod, dubbed thee: The Nintendo of Isaac. The mod is for the game: "The Binding of Isaac Rebirth" which is a sprite based zelda dungeon rouge-like, it features too many power ups you can collect on each floor (over 250) this is where the meat of my Mod is going towards to.

I will be basically making "skins" if you say off existing items from this game, and each item has a certain passive or active ability for the main characters of the game.

For example: There is a item in the game called Infamy, it's a mask that protects the character from frontal shots, in this case, I replaced the item with the familiar Phanto Mask from SMB2 since both items are mask related.

There's many others dumb stuff in the game and I'll be slowly working on this up until basically every item has a Nintendo-like skin, including the upcoming DLC for Isaac which intends to add 100 more items (gulp).

Anyways here's the loot

Below is a list in spoilers tags to see what is what.

I could use your help!

Besides C+C I could use help creating Nintendo items for this game, I may be a huge nerd of Nintendo but I don't know everything, and I need ideas for certain items that make sense, the only rule is that it has to come from a Nintendo game.

Here's a list of what I currently need a matching equivalent to

- tears that stay in place when shooting them (letting go of the shoot keyboard button has them go in a direction)
- tears that become super big
- Tears become poisonous
- an item where isaacs head rotates around his body

Super Smash Bros. - Story 2
        Mall Day

One day, (since Kirby is a chef),
he got his weekly pay of $ 2,000.
So he decided to do what what he
 does best.

Taking his friends on an adventure to
 the mall.

So anyways, about 3 in the morning,
Kirby get everybody up to get ready
 to go.

But since only a few people went with
him every month, (Yes. Month.), he
decided to take new people with him,
 too.

So he got up the following:

 King DeDeDe - Old
 Jigglypuff - New
 Meta Knight - Old
 Samus - New
Luigi (is rarely featured.) - New
 Ness - Old
 Lucas - New
 Toon Link - Old
Everybody was crabby at first but when
they heard about money, they were up
 & running.

Everybody got a fair share of $600,
each. But since they went every MONTH,
 Kirby had been saving up.

(Oh, yeah. His counted total is $40,769.)

So Ness and Lucas went to the toy section,
Luigi went to the Radishes section, King DeDeDe
went to the class of 'How to Clobber Dat Der
Kirbeh', Meta Knight went to the Pringles section,
(Yes. Meta Knight likes Pringles.), Samus went to
 the........something section, I really don't know, and
Link went to the bows and arrows section.

 Wait, hang on.

(Kirby, Sorry I forgot, went to the Cooking section.)

Then Kirby wrote a list. Everybody thinks this is bad
 for some reason.

Hey, it's just a list of what not to get:

Lucas / Ness - anything involving tattoos (only temporary, though)
King DeDeDe - Lessons on 'How to Clobber Dat Der Kirby'
 (He did it anyways, though.)
Luigi - Anything besides Daikons or cake.
Meta Knight - Japanese Kirby Handbooks (yes, they exist.)
Toon Link - Bombs (Yeah. That's it.)
 Jigglypuff - Singing Lessons
 Samus - Stuff
Me (Kirby) - Anything besides food.

So Ness pulls a toy off of the shelf and it says:
 'Price: $6,005'

They think Kirby will let them get it, but watch.

(Or read. Another thing, if you don't get the 'Clobber
Dat Der Kirby' reference, watch the Kirby TV show,
(Which is on YouTube), or look it up on YouTube.)

(If you don't get my Luigi & Radishes joke, i'll publish the stories on here.)

Kirby brings everybody over to the registers with their things.

 He was stunned to see what they had;

 Ness/ Lucas - Tattoos AND a $6,005 toy!
Jigglypuff - A singing class certificate that was half written
DeDeDe - Clobber Dat Der Kirbeh Certificate
 Samus - Stuff
 Luigi - PLUMS (Really, Luigi?)
Toon Link - Bombs and Stuff
Meta Knight - A cart full of Kirby Handbooks (Money well spent.)

Then Kirby jumped up, smacked all of them in the face, made them drop
EVERYTHING, and WALK home. (Because Kirby stole a car.)

I am looking for games with environmental assets either in the level tiles or background of the stages. 2d sidescroller 16 or 32 bit.

They are either futuristic city buildings or train tracks. Park benches, bushes, or wooden houses.

If anyone knows a game with them, please tell me so I rip them.

House of the Dead EX .dat extraction? Need help.

Can anyone please help me extract the contents of the .dat file for House of the Dead EX? I know it may sound crazy, but I actually managed to get my hands on a Sega Lindbergh Hard Drive Disk with all the Sega Lindbergh arcade games on it. Wink

All of the game data for House of the Dead EX is in this archive:

https://mega.co.nz/#F!ahAiDIZA!Ula-qio0vk0PV4ra06f50w

The .dat file was pretty big(3.5 Gigabytes!), so I used WinRAR to split it into 5 parts.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Please respond as soon as possible.

Need help with 3D Movie Maker models.

I have managed to find a zip file full of FBX files of the models (Original Forum, I think there's some interesting stuff on this topic here) (Thank you Pizza the Hutt), but their textures are buggy, not to mention that the Doraemon models come out an absolute clusterfuck and some of the models don't even load (Stimpy, Spunky, sure there's others). Although I think the original 3D Movie Maker characters work just fine.

There was also a script somewhere in that thread that made mock 3D models out of the z-depth maps and the bitmaps of the scenes.

So, anyone want to try and help me give these models a new life? I think they deserve it a bit more than bootleggy the cash in.
