How to actually open models?

$

So, I don't know anything about ripping games. I just decided that I wanted to look at game models so I could study them to get a better understanding of how to model my own, you know, to see how the professionals do it. So I downloaded a model of Mario from Super Mario Galaxy from this site. https://www.models-resource.com/wii/supe.../model/863. But I don't know what to do with it, so I made an account just now so I could ask. This might be a stupid question, but is there a way to get the zip file of the model into Autodesk Maya so I can study it? Or maybe there's some other way to view it. Any help would definitely be appreciated.

Python programming

i don't know if i'm making much sense but here goes

I've recently read more and more on Python (3) and I really like it.
So far I've only done stuff one might consider 'simple' and my input/output consists of text only - and by text I mean inputting text that gets transformed into numbers; integers or floats, or strings, lists or other types. Manipulating these makes for a great exercise in data manipulation but ultimately I'm stuck with text and text only with everything happening in the Terminal.
My endgame is displaying and manipulating real binary files. Instead of inputting text to terminal and dicking around with whatever I can make out of that data, I want to use the same tricks but for inputting real files, reading them as hex or binary values and displaying real graphics, and by graphics I don't mean PNG images or stuff like that, but graphics where I explicitly tell how the graphics should be formed, 1D tiles, RGBA, 4bpp, RLE - you know, explaining how the format works to a computer.

There obviously isn't a Python library/framework/module/whatever explicitly for ROM hacking or Sprite-related things and right now I'm looking into pyglet. I just want to know if I'm shooting myself in the ass.
What are some programming paradigms and what's good practice when dealing with binaries?

I'm making a recolor/graphics edit hack for the first Shining Force (MD version). I'll be posting my work here and any constructive feedback is welcome.

Currently I'm trying to make Lyle's eyes look less weird and more like the artwork, let me know what you think.

[Tutorial] DSi Decrypting/Hacking/Ripping!

$

Hello people,

The DSi Shop is defunct by 2017. These is a vast library of games which will dissapear forever. But, here, at The VG Resource, we can't allow that to happen so easily. Being one of the people that requested the DSi to appear in the ''Consoles'' section, I will tell you how to decrypt and extract the resources using modern technology.
Are you ready? Let's dust off those DSi/DSi XL and start to put them to good use!

Table of Contents:

1.Tools
2. DSi Extraction
3. Decryption with DSi SRL Extractor
4. Usage with any other DS Tools.

1. Tools
-DSi SRL Extractor: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2073...xtract.zip (IMPORTANT FOR DECRYPTION)

(ANY DS TOOLS WORK AFTER EXTRACTING, BUT HERE ARE SOME RECOMMENDATIONS)

-Tinke: https://gbatemp.net/threads/tinke-0-7-2.303529/

-VGMTrans: https://github.com/vgmtrans/vgmtrans/releases

-MKDS Course Modifier: http://florian.nouwt.com/mkdsce.html

-Every File Explorer: https://gbatemp.net/threads/release-ever...er.373615/

2. DSi Extraction
There are two methods:
a) DSi Owners
-If you have a DSi, (NOT A 3DS, IT WILL NOT WORK BEACEUSE THE 3DS DATA IS ENCRYPTED UNDER OTHER KEYS), get an SD card in the console and go to System Options>Data Management. On the DSi section, you will see all the DSiWare you have.
-Select any of your desire, and tap ''Copy''. It will duplicate itself on the SD card.

-Get the SD card out, put in the PC, and use the following path: SD Card>Private>Title. You will encounter your extracted games, but they're encrypted (easy to know why, Nintendo wouldn't let piracy occur so smoothly. The only one who could decrypt the games was the DSi whose files came from, as they use a custom key. But that's why we need the DSi SRL Extractor, the skeleton key! Get ready for the next step!)

b.) Non-DSi Owners
-If you don't have a DSi, Google the games. I'm not allowed to tell you any suggestions, so search it for yourself under your own risk. If the roms you found are already decrypted, skip step 3.

3. Decryption with DSi SRL Extractor
The time has cometh for the glorious part!
-Open the file with the encrypted DSiWare.
-Unzip and open the file with the DSi SRL Extractor.
-Drag and drop your DSiWare into the Extractor.
That's it! Your decrypted rom is on the origin file, right next to the original encrypted .bin, and it has the .nds format. Perfect!! If you already dealt with DS roms before, then you know what to do next.

4. Usage with any other DS Tools. (To be completed)

If you know how to rip DS games, then it's smooth sailing from now on. The files are .nds, so any Nintendo DS ripping program should work.
If you don't know, I recommend this thread: https://www.vg-resource.com/thread-21436.html
Still having questions? Well, if you have the tools I recommended, then let's learn how to start!

a.) Tinke
-Open any rom with Tinke. In the program you can download the game's banner (not animated) as a .png, explore the game's fonts, sprites, text, palletes, songs. Mostly everything in a rom can be explored and extracted, or unpacked. The tool has its limitations, however. Some info can be seen, some cannot.

b.) VGMTrans
-Open any rom with it. In the program you will see the music files in the game as they sound in gameplay. Works most of the cases. Select any of the VGM, you can play or download it. Right click any song, download MIDI with DLS (Downloadable Sound), and put them together in FL Studio (it costs money, but it also has a demo). It works, but  it can fail, so make sure your music sounds the same as the game's before taking any chances. You can also get the sounds from this program, perfect for sound submissions! Just make sure they're all in there!

c.) MKDS Course Modifier/Every File Explorer
Some games like 3D Twist & Match contain 3D models. This is where these programs come into place. They can view most of the 3D stuff in a DS rom. You can choose one of the tools.
-Open the rom with any of them. Browse through the files until you find sections with ''Models'', ''Scenes'', click on any of them.
-If you found what you wanted, click export>obj. You can also export the object's textures, in any format you want. You can see them in Maya or Blender, 3D editors. Best for Models/Textures Resource.

Here is a long, explanatory video I painfully made to show you how it works. Hope you enjoy. (Please excuse my accent, you can select the subtitles for better understandement.)

Happy Halloween!

Hey, happy Halloween everyone! Now some people might be wondering where the Halloween event is this year, and unfortunately we don't really have one. I guess we just kinda forgot about it, I would have arranged something myself but I was super busy with exams. Plus it's hard coming up with ideas, since last year we decided to remove the gift-giving thing (Secret Santa is enough).

So yeah, this time around we're just going to have the same stuff as last time. But hey, we have some new members who may not have seen them, and maybe we can hold another Halloween Attack contest and give out more badges! (Petie?)

Extracting Sound Files from SWTOR

So I came across this thread https://www.reddit.com/r/swtor/comments/...xtraction/ on how to extract sound files from Star Wars The Old Republic. I tried following along but got lost. So I'm wondering if there's anyone else that can help me comprehend this? A guy posted this tutorial to follow http://forum.xentax.com/viewtopic.php?p=69545#p69545 I got lost pretty early in at step 3. It lists the "EasyMYP_v3.6-Spec SWTOR Batch Dict Parser" folder which I don't know where it's located. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I'm Cenabee, also known as Cybernetic Cupcake, and I've been a game resource ripper since the beginning. Having exhausted all my previous games with easily ripped resources, I wish to get more out of my games than ever, and then maybe share my results with other users so they may... uh... do whatever they do with 'em.

Me, personally, I plan to use sprites, models, and sounds in little limited animation shorts. I don't know if they'll be that funny, since I'm a fan of the random humor of Garry's Mod and SFM poops, but hopefully they'll be pretty interesting otherwise.

Find a lot of my dumb works here - https://www.youtube.com/user/GigaCakeMmmKay
In future, I will post more serious works here - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0TIdb8...X-zy0JVgFA

What do you think of Gmod Humor?

I speak, of course, of Garry's Mod videos, non-serious Source Filmmaker projects, and anything else relating to the strange collection of Source Engine based madness, especially on YouTube.

My personal take on it is that it surprises me how much it works, like, you think it would stop being funny after a while, but then someone finds a new animation technique, or makes an obscure game or film reference, or otherwise replenishes the randomness pool, and it somehow works again. To be honest, I rather wish more non-machinima films were like this, not so much like silly Flash animations, but more like true Stop-Motion and Pixilation works with that sort of oddball humor.

If you absolutely hate Gmod videos, that's fine -- it's not everyone's cuppa -- but I'd like to see whether anyone agrees that the sort of surrealism in 3D could go elsewhere, or even if it has already. I've seen Terry Gilliam's surrealistic animations, and a few experimental films as goofy as some of the tamer Gmod works, but I could always see more.

The Game of Life (1998 PC)

I was trying to rip some of the files in the PC version of The Game of Life with Watto's Game Extractor, but I got discouraged when I saw only hexadecimal information, no trace of image data. I'm not sure whether I was using the program incorrectly, whether I simply didn't establish a proper file heading or something, or whether it's just arranged in such a way that the program couldn't understand. I'd like confirmation on whether it was one of the three before someone makes fun of me; I am new at this but I'd like to learn.

I think the sprites and sounds of GoL would make a good retro gaming addition to the VG Resource collection, mostly because I want to make a GoL based surreal short, but I'm sure others could benefit as well.

As I'm not sure which files are important and which simply have programming data, I've collected all the files excluding executables in one 7z; it's too big for VG's attachment system, so I've uploaded it to Dropbox. If for some reason this link fails, I will upload a mirror elsewhere.

Punch-Out (Wii)

Apoc and RTB can attest that I've had a damnably difficult time with Punch-Out's files. Next Level Games did their stuff very good to discourage piracy, probably at Nintendo's behest, but it would still be good to utilize the assets for fair use research and educational purposes, not to mention funny parodies.

I've asked for any help ripping these files on two separate forums already, and I've seen others ask the same, with little help. I still figure that if the program itself can read these files, a human could, too. The fellows above have been able to extract texture data and capture 3D scenes in Dolphin, but the models appear to have a unique method of texturing with two layers of skin, one for base texture and one for cel shading. It would be fiendishly difficult, I imagine, to return a model to a base pose from these 3D captures, so it's important to see if there's any way of getting the original model data.

If that doesn't work at all, I would still like to know how to extract audio files; it's apparently possible, as a few game music channels have HQ rips of the soundtracks, but I'd like to extract the sound effects and dialogue, and the only extent of my abilities in this is to record them from the unlockable sound test screen. I previously did this with an RCA connector compatible USB drive, but it sounded like a videotape rip; when I tried again with Dolphin, some of the sounds were slowed and distorted.

I think this is an annual thing for me, to bug people to rip this game for me, but I promise this time, if there's ANYTHING I can do, to help out as much as possible. Right now, however, I neglected to bring an attached file with me, as I want to make sure what I'm doing is not a waste of my time before I begin with the file dumping.

Orly's Draw-A-Story

Another childhood favorite, with graphics and SFX I'd love to use in projects, but even though it has the Broderbund Mohawk Archive file format, I can't open it in Game Extractor, at least not successfully. If I'm using the program wrong, I'm willing to learn how to use it right, or use a different program to the same end.

Any advice for custom spriters? (How to animate sprites better)

I've been trying to draw my own sprites for games for a long time, but I've noticed my early works always come out a bit stiff-looking. I know it would take more work to make something more smoothly animated and with more flowing motion, but I don't quite know how. I've had better luck making larger drawings flow more nicely, but I don't know if I can scale it down without losing detail.

So I've seen the models ripped from this game on the site, but ever since CommanderVideo was released, there's not been anything else. I've wanted to rip from this game myself as I have all the DLC and I would really like to get the Quote model and Dr. Fetus model. I was hoping RTB would release his script of how to do so, but if he has I can't seem to find it anywhere. Does anyone know how to properly rip this game?

Turning voices into TTS?

I like sentence splicing like in Gmod videos, but unless I have a list of what files say what, so it's easier to find the syllables I want, I have a difficult time of splicing sounds together.

I wonder if there's an "automated" way of doing this, not necessarily to instantly recognise syllables, but to at least organize them for the user to sort out by phoneme and intensity/emotion. That way, when someone types up a sentence, the sounds are automatically assigned to different words and can be further edited from there (changing the accent of a word, increase or decrease intensity, etc.).

I know UTAloids have the capacity to do this for music, but I've not much success in navigating UTAU.

Master System sounds?

Hi guys it's the Sega Master System obsessed enthusiast again.

As the title suggests, I need help with ripping sounds from Master System games that do not have a sound test, I've heard of people ripping music by doing some sort of trick to mute the sound effects, but I've found nothing about ripping sounds at all, not even on SMS Power. I just need either some trick to disable the sound, or a way to hack to the game's coding and extract the sounds directly and convert them to wav somehow.
