We're back!

Hey everyone! I'm sure most of you are curious as to what's been happening these past 11 days. I'm sorry it took so long to get everything back online and then to post this thread but I am here to finally explain what happened.

11 days ago, I was doing some routing maintenance on the server and when I was done, rebooted it to make sure everything started up correctly. I'm fairly certain that nothing I was doing at the time could have caused what happened next but it's unfortunately rather impossible to say for sure. Anyway, the server was taking a ridiculous amount of time to restart so I decided to check into it and found out that it was hanging on boot.

After spending a few days attempting to recover, I resigned myself to the fact that the server was lost. I was able to boot into recovery and grab all of the files, including the database, so we didn't lose anything but it still meant I'd have to rebuild the server from scratch. This is where the fun begins.

This was my first time actually doing a Linux server build on my own and I wound up doing it three times in this process so I'm fairly competent at it now. Getting the server up and running was actually fairly simple. Most of the software installed right away, I figured out the best way to secure it, and even managed to successfully sync all of the backed up files from my local machine to the server. With some hiccups along the way and guidance from Rob when I hit a wall here and there, everything seemed to be going smoothly. So smoothly, in fact, that I brought the server back up the other night and many of you made it on to the VG Resource forum for a bit.

Unfortunately, nothing except the VG Resource forum was working. All of my code, which relied on a specific way of interacting with the database, appeared to be broken in this new environment and hours (and days) of troubleshooting proved fruitless. I was at my wit's end and honestly didn't know what I was going to do until today.

One of the first things I did, even before I started copying everything back to the server, was to go and change the saved passwords I had in my code for connecting to the database. I was on Skype with Dazz at the time and he can vouch for the fact that I actually did think of this step so when the site wasn't working, the fact that a password might be wrong didn't even cross my mind. The error log pointed to there being a problem with the database connection itself so that's what I spent my time researching.

Well... it turned out to be a password. I have to database connection functions written for the Resource sites - one to connect to the site database and the other to connect to the forum. I updated the password for the site database and the config file for the forum itself but forgot to change the password in my own forum function, which completely broke the site (as I'm sure many of you saw). Days of work (literally) and two server rebuilds later, it turns out all I had to do was update one line of code...

With that out of the way, a little housekeeping commenced, I fixed folder permissions which allowed uploads again, and everything seems good now. Of course, please report any bugs you run into and I'll do my best to address them as quickly as I can.

Welcome back, sorry for the extended down time, thank you for your support and encouragement, and let's all hope this never happens again!

TL;DR Server crashed, lots of work went into fixing it, even more work went into figuring out why it still didn't work, turned out to be a wrong password.

Extracting sounds from Disney Infinity (Wii)

Hello!

I have a Wii ISO of Disney Infinity and I've been trying to extract voice effects from the game.

Inside the "sound" folder of the ISO there are loads of .fev and .fsb files, usually 1 of each for every character. For example, for Elsa there is:

fro_elsa.fev
fro_elsa_se.fsb

I've tried extracting the sounds with Dolphin and WiiScrubber but the same thing happens in each program. The filesizes are always 0 bytes after extraction.

Would anyone be able to help me? I'd like to extract sounds of the characters, such as Elsa and Jessie.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What's up, Doc? (Drshnaps' birthday)

I'm surprised nobody noticed this yet, but today is Drshnaps' birthday!

For thirty years, he has provided us with marvelous rips and some pretty good sprite comics (even though his main sprite comic web site is out of commission). Keep up the good work, mate!

EDIT: Just noticed that it is also Iceman404's birthday. I'm sorry I didn't notice it right away, friend! I hope you have a good one, too!

Well... after PMing Petie about this issue, I was told that there was a box below the reply text box. I look there and see... nothing. Absolutely nothing. Cry

These were a pain in the ass to rip- sheesh. But I couldn't find any rips of her online so I figured it had to happen.

Underrated games you enjoy

Besides the mainstream classics that you love and enjoy, such as Banjo-Kazooie and Ocarina of Time, I'm wondering if you guys enjoy the more obscure and not so popular games just as much.

Here are a few I like/want to play.

Tomato Adventure
This Japan exclusive game was developed by Alpha Dream (I'm sure I don't have to tell you what they are best known for). It may look simple and childish, but the gameplay is pretty deep and everything looks cute and gorgeous! I like the character designs and the Action Command-like gameplay. Definitely Alpha Dream's most creative game and something I would love to get my hands on in the states (also, a sequel would be nice).

Freshly Picked Tingle: Rosie Rupee Land
Don't be so quick to judge this game because Tingle is the main protagonist. The first official spin-off of the Zelda games holds up pretty well. Sure, some of the characters are ugly and the guessing game mechanic can drive some people off, but if you look past that, this game is a lot of fun! It's full of humor, has a deep plot with nice side plots, the battle and bodyguard system are brilliant, and you'll never run out of uses for Rupees (unlike in other Zelda games)! I'd play it myself, but I didn't have much luck obtaining it (even though I do live in Europe).

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts
While a black sheep, the latest title in the Banjo-kAzooie games has a lot to offer. While the famous duo is not much to look at, the rest of the character designs are actually appealing and the scenery is beautiful. The charming humor and dialog is still there and it is chalk full of references. Even though the platforming is scarce, creating and piloting your own vehicles is the next best thing as you take on challenge after challenge. Say what you will about it, but I had a blast with this game throughout almost all of it!

Tomato Adventure Ripping Project

Welp, I already submitted a custom sprite sheet to the site, so why not expand on that by proving that I am capable of ripping sprites?

Originally, I wanted to rip some of the sprites from Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, but considering that two certain users who… Weren't very pleasant to me for years ended up ripping a lot of them and leaving me without my mark on it, I decided to instead invest my time taking sprites from another Alpha Dream masterpiece that has barely been touched.

So far, I ripped as many sprites as I can from the first few scenes from the game (I would rip the intro, but that has already been done). So far, 1/4 of the character naming screen has been ripped (I say 1/4 because there are four characters to name in the game) and I ripped most of the intro cutscene. I am not certain if I ripped the adorable Tomato guy properly because he was in front of a black screen, which caused his outline to blend. The thing about the outlines in this game are that they are a little dodgy because they are a little "stepped" and jaggy if you know what I mean. As a result, I had to make a guess at how the actual outline looks in respect to the game's style. Also, there is a matter I might mihgt have missed a few poses.

The other challenging part of this is the stag where the Tomato Baby King demonstrates his ray weapon. Not only was the audience a little hard to rip (they moved too fast an randomly for me to get all their poses), but I also had some trouble ripping the gun when it was shooting out sparks. Regardless, I did my best.

By the way, in case your'e wondering why I ad so many text boxes lying about, it is due to the fact that I am attempting to rip the font from the game. Since I cannot speak/read Japanese, I had to rip this boxes and save them for when I compare the symbols and compile a lost of them. Understandably, this would be the hardest part of the project.

Besides ripping complete sheets, the other thing I intend to do is expand upon the sheets already there (such as the ones ripped by Solink) by adding my own additions. The only unusual thing is that when I rip from the emulator I am using (an OpenEmu since I use a MacBook Pro), the sprites are displayed in a completely different palette than the one used in the already ripped sprites. With this in mind, what needs to be done about that?

Anyway, with that said, I would like this to become a ripping project. As I mentioned before, I cannot understand Japanese, so ripping from this will be harder than it would be if this was translated from the start. In short, I could use some help gathering the sprites that are a little more tricky to obtain. Thankfully, though, I could rip the backgrounds and several characters with ease, but the ones that require had to trigger events and are too fast to capture would prove troublesome. This is made even more difficult because of the emulator I am using. Considering that the OpenEmu has some basic functions, I would have a hard time getting all the sprites that would require me to toggle layers/slow down time. As I currently do it, all I have to rely on are save states, the master pause button (which freezes the entire game), and Grab (the screen capturing application for Mac).

What do you think, guys?

Why TSR?

So the big question is...
Why do you come to TSR?
I mean uhh. VG Resource?

My answer:
I visit every now and then, trying to soak up Inspiration.
It's kind of sad, but I look at this hobby and tell myself, why haven't I've published anything real with this skill.

I mean, the concept of Pixel art always sparked my interest as a kid, yet I get older, and look back at what I've done with it. =(

A little disapointing, but hey it's been a good learning experience.

How about you guys?

Some sprites I made a couple years back

I know most of these sprites look hideous, but this was what I was capable of two years ago.

They don't look like this character's current design, they probably don't animate very well because I've actually never animated any of them myself.

I've actually not been able to even edit them to make him look like he does now...

But you can look at these here "sprites" and tell me how good or bad I was back then.

Could someone rip these two 8-bit songs?

Alrighty. So on this game for the GBC called Cross Country Racing, I've found these two songs (Main Menu and Rally Menu) which I would like to have ripped. I'm really just going to be using it for listening to, but they are some pretty good songs.

Um.. What do I say.. Well, I've been fusing Pokemon for at least 9 months or so, and no, before you decide to hate me, I'm not one of the stupid fusioners who swaps faces and pallets, I actually make pretty decent Poke-Fusions after my experinces, and loads of tutorials before I even thought of starting. See for yourself:
These are just some of my Fusions. My complete list is here on DeviantArt. So what do you think? Tell me please! I think.. Sorry..
Oh, I also do requests! I do Pokemon Gens 1-5 (I need some Gen 6 Sprites to fuse them) and you must have a DeviantArt account. Heh.. I hope I don't get banned or something.. Shy

Gamecube/Wii Sprite Ripping Tutorial

Greetings, everyone! I'm Mystie, and today, I will guide you through the sprite-ripping process for Gamecube and Wii games. This also works for textures too.

The process of ripping GCN/Wii sprites is very simple and straight-forward, so here's how you do it:

Step 1. Launch Dolphin.

Step 2. Click on "Options", and then "Graphics Settings" from the drop-down menu.

Step 3. In the Graphics Configuration window, click the "Advanced" tab, then check the "Dump Textures" box. Close the window.

Step 4. Select and launch the game you want to rip from. For this demonstration, I will be using Mr. Driller: Drill Land, a game that is 97% sprites.

Step 5. Play up to the point that has the sprites you want to rip. Let's say I want to rip sprites of regular Anna. To do that, I will go to the World Drill Tour event, and choose Anna. From here, I will make sure to do every action I can with her, so I will have a complete set of sprites.

Step 6. Close or pause the game once finished.

Step 7. Go to Documents\Dolphin Emulator\Dump\Textures\[game ID]. In this case, the ID is GDPJAF. View files by Large Icons or Extra Large Icons, and sort by Date Modified. This will help you find your sprites easier.

Step 8. Select the sprites, open them in a picture-editing program, and then paste them onto your sprite sheet.

And you're done! See, I told ya it was easy!

Half-Life 2: Ep 1 & 2 on STEAMLESS comp?

My laptop doesn't have the internet, so I was forced to install and download Half Life 2, Ep 1 & Ep 2. Now I'm trying to transfer Ep 1 & Ep 2 to my laptop so that I can play them. Everything is going well, except for the fact that I can't find the executables. Anyone have any idea where they are?

Mac-Based Game Request

Hello folks, I have a request for a somewhat obscure old Mac game series by the name of 'Munchers'. Basically 'Super Munchers' and the spinoff 'Troggle Trouble Math'. What I'm looking for is character and enemy sprites. They shouldn't be too hard as the characters all only move in four catdinal directions with three frames per motion that I've seen. I would do it myself but I have no idea how to emulate a mac properly, nor do I have the resources to actually get one. I hope someone can help.

The Tech's in the Mail: The Technology Preview Review Thread

A general thread for neat hardware we can't quite get our hands on!

I don't wanna prevent people from making threads dedicated to specific gadgets, so I'll lay down some rules about which tech we're talking about:
- Tech that has been announced/confirmed
- Tech that is in alpha or beta
- Tech that is not yet available outside of select markets
- Tech on Kickstarter or Indiegogo (Post here if you want to talk about the funding campaign)

Looney Tunes Cartoon Weapons/Object rips

Can anyone get the assorted Cartoon Weapondry from these Looney Tunes Games?:

Bugs Bunny in ''Rabbit Rampage''
Road Runner's Death Valley Rally
Desert Demolition
Looney Tunes Double Pack (Game Boy Advance)
Duck Amuck (Nintendo DS)

I've been to Bugs bunny at the Symphony II, and after watching it, I've got my Looney Tuney Mojo/Inspiration back.

I need those cartoon weapondries for some special projects I'm going to work on. Smile

Animation

Okay well, I am learning how to animate.
This is a whole new chapter for me, I am usually creating character in still poses, I rarely ever animate.

So I want to add a simple walk cycle here, though I keep having a problem with the legs, I always make them look either too thin, or too wide.
This is what I have so far

I know it's not a lot to show here, but like I said I am new to animation.
