Direct3D HAL Model Rip

$

I'm asking a long shot question here, but I'll try.

Is there any known way to rip from a game that uses Direct3D HAL? I've been trying to rip from Fur Fighters for some years now, but the PS2 version appears to use backface culling and the Dreamcast version barely loads, let alone anything else.

The PC game can be played using Direct 3D HAL, RGB Emulation or ADI Radeon 3000 Graphics. Are any of these possible?

The file extensions use .skl which I've also been unsuccessful in viewing/ripping.

Blender 2.49B Applying Texture Types Tutorial.

Before we begin: Please note that I am self-taught. This is by trial and error, so if anything is described incorrectly, please P.M me so I can rectify the mistake.

Chapter 1: Introduction; Complete;
Chapter 2: Diffuse Maps; Complete;
Chapter 3: Normal / Bump Maps; Incomplete;
Chapter 4: Specular Maps; Incomplete;
Chapter 5: Alpha Maps; Incomplete;

Chapter #1: Introduction;
As my fiance constantly asks me to texture the models she is working on, and she's slowly learning to model herself, I've decided to type up a tutorial for you. This tutorial will cover a multitude of texture types. This tutorial is written with beginners in mind. As I had more than a nightmarish time trying to learn these simple methods, I thought it best to create tutorials on them. Any feedback and/or questions are welcome.

Covered Textures in this reading:

Diffuse Maps: These maps are the base texture. They provide the mesh with its wonderful array of colours.

Required Tools:
A ) Blender 2.49B.
B ) A mesh, with the map specified above. For this reading, I'm using a Pizza Box from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. You can download it HERE. This model was ripped by yours truly.

Chapter 1.A: Setting up the stage;

Step 1) Press A. Make sure that no objects are highlighted.
//Authors Note: The "A" key is a shortcut to select / deselect all meshes.
Step 2) Right-click the cube that is set on the stage by default.
Step 3) Press delete, or "x" and delete the cube, as we will not need it.( Fig 1.A )
.gif  Fig 1.A.gif (Size: 111.14 KB / Downloads: 3)
Step 4) Right-Click the default lamp and camera, and press H. We want to keep the lamp for lighting, the camera for rendering.
Step 5) Click on File, and import your mesh.( Fig 1.B )
.gif  Fig 1.B.gif (Size: 139.56 KB / Downloads: 1)

Chapter 2: Diffuse Map;

A diffuse map, is named as "XXX.YYY", "XXX_DIFF.YYY", "XXX_D.YYY", etc. XXX = file name. YYY = file type. Different games use different file types. Blender is able to import a nice array of file types. .png, bmp, tga, dds, etc. If the file type can not be imported using Blender, use XNView to open the image, and than save the image as an alternate file type.

Step 1) Right-Click on the mesh, and make sure it is highlighted.
Step 2) Press either F5, or left click on the materials tab.( Fig 2.A )
.gif  Fig 2.A.gif (Size: 106.79 KB / Downloads: 1)
Step 3) In the "Links And Pipeline" under "Link To Object", left click on "Add New". This will link a material to the object. A material can be linked to multiple objects, by left clicking on the "arrow" that's next to the "Add New" tab.
Step 4) Rename the material. For this example, I am using "TMNT_Pizza Box", but you can name it whatever you wish.( Fig 2.B )
.gif  Fig 2.B.gif (Size: 144.82 KB / Downloads: 2)
Step 5) In the "Texture" tab, click on "Add New" and renaming it to something. For this example, I will be using "Kd", but you can use anything that you wish.( Fig 2.C )
.gif  Fig 2.C.gif (Size: 143.7 KB / Downloads: 0)
Step 6) Click on "Map Input" in the Texture Tab, and change the value from, "Orco" to "UV". Leave all the other values at default. ( Fig 2.D )
.gif  Fig 2.D.gif (Size: 155.69 KB / Downloads: 0)
Step 7) Now click on the "Textures" button and change the "Texture Type" to "Image".( Fig 2.E )
.gif  Fig 2.E.gif (Size: 113.11 KB / Downloads: 0)
Step 8) Click on "Load" and go to the directory that contains the Texture.
Click on "Add Image".( Fig 2.F )
.gif  Fig 2.F.gif (Size: 116.07 KB / Downloads: 1)
Step 9) Press F12, to Render your model, which is now textured, with a diffuse map.( Fig 2.E )
.gif  Fig 2.G.gif (Size: 36.16 KB / Downloads: 1)
Step 10) Save the file, by pressing F2. We will be using this model in the next chapter.

HD 8-bit Remakes in HiSMS and HDNes

Alex Kidd in Miracle World HD by MCBRemakes (Marcelo Barbosa)

The Sega Master System emulator HiSMS (by Botrops), and the NES emulator HDNES (by mkwong98), are designed to make it possible to create HD remakes of your favorite 8-bit games.

As you play, the emulators rip the displayed graphics to image files that can be edited in Photoshop, at 2x or 4x the original resolution. The games still play exactly the same, but their graphics can be remade for HD.

Marcelo Barbosa kicked things off with a gorgeous remake of Alex Kidd in Miracle World for SMS.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNcGK_V960Q
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScyB69dwRA0

Mkwong has completed a remake of Super Mario Bros., although his art style leaves something to be desired. He also seems to have remade Kung Fu and Bombsweeper.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N57ApspY...e=youtu.be

It would be possible to create a graphics pack for Super Mario Bros resembling New Super Mario Bros, Paper Mario or an animated style. Games like Kung Fu and SMB don't have a ton of graphics, so there's a lot that can be done.

Info and downloads:
http://hisms.orgfree.com/
http://forums.nesdev.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9935

Mkwong continues to update HDNes.

I can't get either program to work on my Mac using Wine -- probably because HiSMS uses Direct3D 7 -- but they should work on Windows.

I'd love to see artists tackle the 8-bit classics.

Since there are so many 3D models available here from later-gen games, it would be very possible to rig and pose them to match the sprite sheets for the original games, and then use that art in 4x emulation in the games themselves.

For example, here are the sprite sheets for a few Sega Master System Disney games. These could be recreated with Kingdom Hearts models.

Disney Emblems (need advice)

$

So I'm going to start a little project but I could use some creative advice. I'm going to be making an emblem/symbol for every Disney animated feature film + partially animated film. They are going to be one solid clipart color, similar to the symbols you see in Smash Bros. for each character's series.

However I don't know what I should use for each movie.

Here's a complete list of the symbols I need:

Mickey Mouse = Mickey Mouse Ears*
Snow White = Apple? Heart Box symbol?
Pinocchio
Fantasia = Sorcerer's Hat*
The Reluctant Dragon
Dumbo
Bambi
Saludos Amigos/Three Caballeros
Make Mine Music
Song of the South
Fun and Fancy Free
Melody Time
The Wind in the Willows
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Cinderella = Glass Slipper
Alice in Wonderland = Tea cup? Cards?
Peter Pan = Tinkerbell? Peter Pan's Hat?
Lady and the Tramp
Sleeping Beauty = Spindle?
One Hundred and One Dalmations
Sword in the Stone = Sword in the Stone*
Mary Poppins = Umbrella? Handbag?
Jungle Book
Aristocats
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
Robin Hood
Winnie the Pooh = Honey Pot?
The Rescuers/Rescuers Down Under
Pete's Dragon
The Fox and the Hound
The Black Cauldron = the cauldron itself*
The Great Mouse Detective
Oliver and Company =Drivers cap?
The Little Mermaid = Trident? Seashell?
Beauty and the Beast = Rose*
Aladdin = Lamp*
The Lion King = Simba drawing*
Pocahontas = Leaves?
Hunchback of Notre Dame = King of Fools Crown*
Hercules = Pendant*
Mulan = dragon*
Tarzan
Dinosaur
Emporer's New Groove = Headdress?
Atlantis
Lilo & Stitch =Laser?
Treasure Planet = Compass?
Brother Bear
Home on the Range
Chicken Little
Meet the Robinsons
Enchanted
Bolt
The Princess and the Frog
Tangled = Sun*
Wreck-It Ralph = Controller? Hammer?
Frozen

As you can see I already have a few ideas. But I'd like hear what you guys can tell me. Thanks.

I have submitted sounds for Spider-man Battle for New York GBA yesterday.
Now they are no longer pending approval, but I looked in the GBA section
for Spider-man Battle for New York and the entry has yet to be put in.
I have received no PM's or emails telling me that my sounds have been
denied. So is this normal in the submission process? are they still placing
the sounds and the new game entry in?

Note: I have not submitted these sounds on the forums, but on the sounds
resource site itself.

Retail Price & Play Time -Versus- Indie Price & Play Time

$

Something I thought we could discuss for quite some time now. What do you guys think about the ratio of money spent versus time played in games these days?

Retail price games are often in the $60 range. Many, however, only give say, 4-7 hours of gameplay. However if you look at indie price games such as Terraria or Minecraft ($15 and $30 respectively), you get over 400+ hours of gameplay. One could argue the type of game influences that too, since these are open sandbox games. However, what about indie games in the same vein as retail games, such as the Binding of Isaac versus Legend of Zelda?

How do you feel on the money spent versus play time ratio?

Before anyone says this, I'll just say it now: "Who cares about the price? As long as you enjoy the game, the money wasn't wasted/money was well spent." This is true, but doesn't extend this discussion.

Hey, I just want to wish Zac a happy birthday today!

What's odd to me is that I think that there is more than one Zac on this web site. With only just a period distinguishing the two, I think it could cause a little bit of confusion going on here… Aw well! Have a good day all the same, Zac!

BRRES Viewer UV Issues

I have a problem with BRRES Viewer. I downloaded Version 1.3.1 and imported some models I extracted from Wii Sports Resort. The UV's work fine in BRRES Viewer. However, no matter how many times I export, no matter what format, no matter what method I use, the UV's are ALWAYS broken in ANY other program apart from BRRES Viewer. Here's a screenshot of the AirShip from Wii Sports Resort in the Viewer:

[Image: Viewer.png?_subject_uid=209944326&am...AU0NIszPpg]

Now in Noesis:

[Image: Noesis.png?_subject_uid=209944326&am...VUc6P-1jqw]

The proper UV's are in the Viewer, and not in Noesis. The same issue happens in 3ds Max, Unity3D, Blender, and other software. I can't get it to work!

Any help? Thanks.

Brian Griffin (FGDB remake)

Sousanator did well on ripping Brian Griffin for SDB. Well, I'm planning to do a modern-day remake.

I managed to use Simplector to trace what Brian looks like today and IsoPix to pixelate the traced vectors. Here's what turned out so far.

And I'm using a different image hosting website now, because Imageshack will no longer allow free uploads, even through their ".us" client.

However, I don't mind a little help sprucing this idle sprite up.

New Signature Limitations.

$

I'm introducing a new limitation on signatures, due to the confusion a number of signatures have begun to cause.

From now on, all signatures must abide by a maximum height of 200px. As we use a scalable theme, this does not mean you can use 100% of the width, as this is dependent upon what resolution you are viewing the site.

If your signature goes over 200px, the site will automatically cut the content off, and it will be rendered invisible.

I'm sorry if this causes any issues with any of you, but this is a change that will hopefully make the forum easier to navigate and read.

All the best.

Corrupted Sprites?

$

I dunno if I'm posting this in the right thread, so forgive me if this isn't the right place
Hey everyone!
So a few months ago I decided to rip some sprites from an SNES game, so I loaded up the ROM in ZSNES, took a precise savestate, and opened it up in VSNES, right? Well, right after I opened up the memviewer and went straight to the rom to rip the sprites when I realized...all of the tiles for the games sprites were corrupted!
I just don't know what went wrong.Sad I mean, in every other SNES game that I have, I can open up the rom and view the sprite graphics perfectly fine. This one...not so much. Most of the tiles have half their graphics cut off by static; how am I supposed to assemble the sprites if I can't see part of their corresponding tiles?
If anyone can help me out with this issue then, please, lend me a helping hand.

P.S: The game in question is The Death and Return of SupermanWink

ShyGuy's 3D Animations

A few hours ago, I came across this great animation thread, http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=103604, which made me realize that I don't actually understand how to really animate. I've been wanting to get back into 3D animating for a while, so why not start at the beginning?

saw this on page 2
slipsiu Wrote:Beginner tips... Start with ball bounces. Once you've got a good set of ball bounces done and you understand timing, then move onto a walk cycle using the ball and legs rig found online.

Here is a list of beginner excersizes. Do them in order.

-bounce in place cycle. First and Last frame are at the top of the screen.
-Bounce in place with a coming to a stop. First frame is at the top, last frame is on the ground.
-Bounce across the screen with the same height each bounce.
-Bounce across the screen, each bounce shorter than the last, eventually coming to a stop
-A pendulum swinging, eventually coming to a stop
-A pendulum hits the ball, causing the ball to hit a wall, bounce a few times and come to a settle, all the while, the pendulum comes to a stop as well.

And thus, my first 2 animations Big Grin

[Image: JMlWQ75.gif][Image: r0Sz3G6.gif]
I've also noticed something about inverse(?) actions(?).
[Image: Ot2AMv1.png][Image: lmIVpFD.png]
[Graphs For the second animation]

The first, rainbow-like graph is the y-position. The second is the X,Y scale (squish, stretch). The squish and stretching scale curves are the exact inverse of eachother throughout and the animation looks amazing (For a ball haha- thinking about it again, this should've been way more obvious to me)

Anyways, expect more soon. Any feedback is welcome as well as any animation tutorials or free (blender) rigs.

In the future, I'll probably take character animation requests just because it's so fun Tongue
