SMB3 Super Crowned Sprites

Hey everyone, I've got plenty of things to share getting back into sprite art again. So for now it's mainly sprites I worked on trying to keep to SMB3 style. It was a basis for the SMB3 ROM Hack where all the enemies are made into a Super Crown form.

Tomba!/Tombi! sprites

Long story short, our beloved Random Talking Bush ripped these Tomba sprites many years ago. I asked him about it and he told me he used a VRAM viewer to grab just an assortment of sprites from whatever was in VRAM page 0.
This sheet, while better than nothing, is incomplete and the colors are a bit off, so the boys and I at the Tomba Club Discord looked into it and cracked the Tomba! (or Tombi! for all you eurobros there) sprite format some time ago.

There are numerous unused and never before seen sprites across the versions and in the case of the demo discs, even unfinished sprites, something seldom seen in any game really.

The folder naming convention is region_version_type where region can be Japanese or NTSC*, version can be retail or demo disc and type can be "Normal" for typical "2.5D" gameplay sprites and "Map" for the isometric town/village scenes.
Inside any folder there are three additional folders of which RLE and DRI can be ignored; only the PNG folder really matters.

I need some help assembling a sheet. The problems I'm facing are:
1. How to minimise redundancy while keeping consistency? There are many sprites shared between versions and regions but also many unique ones.
2. How to minimise sheet size while keeping sprite anchor point? The individual PNGs are now 128x128 and they've got a lot of padding, so to speak. The must be a way to mathematically figure out the best crop amount, but it must be for all the sprites.
3. Related to point 1, but how to arrange the sprites (is it necessary?) so it's obvious which sprites are unused/unfinished or which are Japanese/US or normal/map. Should there be two sheets? Maybe four?

I used Psx-VRAM for the first time but the process is long to reorder properly, by any chance is there any program to do it automaticaly ?

Also fortunately, when you find one palette the others same kind of sprite seems to have their in the same area but have you any tips to find them quickly ?

Hey - Kosheh here, community mod. We've decided to adopt a more lax request policy on the forums now, so I figured I'd just throw down a few suggestions if you want to maximize the chances of your requests getting approved.

tl;dr:
  • Don't be a slavedriver
  • Big big requests like custom things are best off asked in Commissions
  • Keep realistic expectations
  • Be polite
  • This is a quiet forum. Be patient, as it may be a while before you get a reply.
  • Even you can rip too. Check out our Wiki and Discord for tips and advice on how to do so
In detail:
  • No one is obligated to work for free
    This really needs to be emphasized first and foremost. The members of this community are not your personal slaves, so please don't go about treating them like they are. If you do, the staff will be notified and you'll likely be warned for harassment.
    If you're looking for an OC to be modeled or a notoriously difficult encryption to be reverse-engineered to the point where you need custom software written, this probably isn't the subforum for you. You'll have a better chance over in the Commissions subforum, as people will likely be more than happy to fulfill your trickier requests in exchange for money or work in an equal amount of value ["I'll write you a poem if you draw my OC"].
    I mean, you could post a request for your OC to be sprited or modeled or something for free, but don't expect it to be fulfilled anytime soon.

  • Tone down your expectations, and be kind to others
    Instead of asking for every single asset in the game to be ripped, maybe just ask them to rip a character you really want...or two. Odds are that if they figure it out and you're a nice guy, they'll be more than happy to teach you how they did it. And what's better than one person ripping all the assets of the game when there are now two people who can rip from that game!

  • Be realistic with your requests
    The people who rip models and sprites and sounds all have lives - their obligations first and their hobbies second. Their hobby might happen to be reverse engineering! Nice! But no one is going to rip every asset from a game, just for you, by next Saturday for your school project. That's infeasible unless they quit their job and you're paying them a working wage in 2019.

    Please keep this in mind when you're talking to people about possibly fulfilling your request. Talking down to them is going to make them less likely to fulfill your request. Don't try to haggle, either - this stuff is hard work, and these folks really deserve their due diligence.

  • Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime
    This isn't really to do with requesting, but it's worth mentioning. If you find out how to do a real cool thing, and I mean real cool, feel free to share it on our Wiki as there's several others willing to learn how to do the same thing*! The more you share, the more we as a community can learn and grow. And who knows? Maybe we'll reach a point where requesting becomes irrelevant because we'll all have that knowledge posted somewhere so you can pull those assets from the game within a day or two. Cool

    * Some people may not be OK with you sharing their trade secrets. Respect their wishes.

  • The harsh reality aka "State of the Community"
    This is a rather quiet forum and most of the community has since moved to our Discord server to share their creative works or ask for advice on rips. As a result, don't expect an answer within a few hours; it might be a few days or even weeks before someone responds to your topic.
    Simply put, we heavily encourage you learn to rip assets from games rather than ask us to rip them for you. Of course, if you need a set of sprites or a model of a character for a fun personal project, go ahead and continue writing that topic.
    * The creative side of our community has really slumped in the past few years, the odds of people stepping up to create custom sprites or models for you are slim to none. Once again, your best bet for that is to head over to the Commissions board and work something out with an entrepreneurial soul.
    ** This is always subject to change should the board surge in popularity somehow, but that seems highly unlikely in 2019.


I think this pretty much touches on everything. If anything else pops up should a trend in the subforum change, I'll update this as needed.

Trying to rip the All-Out-Attack Portraits from Persona 3 Portable

So it turns out that nowhere online do full quality png's of Ken's, Aigis', and Koromaru's All-Out-Attack exist. I've only found low-quality JPEG's while everyone else has PNG's that I assume were extracted straight from the game. that said, I started digging into the game files. I'm rather certain that it's contained in the .EPL files under battle/cutin/. After looking at this thread for help extracting the .EPL files, I was able to get a couple of .RMD files. From here though, opening up the .RMD files with Amicitia only yielded the following result

That's not very helpful. Not to mention that every single other .RMD file yields this empty result with the same number under Misc Nodes.

So basically, I have a couple questions.
1. Where are the all out attack portraits located? Is it in battle/cutin as I thought, or is it in another folder?
1a. As a follow-up, there are three folders within battle/cutin called mixraid, syoudaku, and syoukan. I'm fairly certain that the EPL files under mixraid are where the AOA portraits are located since the files are named "MR_Hex#" and then "MRF_Hex#" which makes me think they stand for Mixed Raid and Mixed Raid Female respectively.
2. Am I extracting images from the .EPL's correctly? In the other thread, the OP was ripping files from Persona 4, which may have a different way of doing things than P3P.
3. Is it possible that I need to find something else to view the .RMD's?

What qualifies as music?

I'm not sure where else to ask this question but basically, I know music submissions aren't allowed, but where exactly is the line? Like say there's a short jingle that I'm 99% sure is unused, and is stored as a sound effect, and another that IS used, but is also stored as a sound effect and in-game it plays over the normal BGM as part of a boss attack's sfx. Do those count as soundtrack? For the first example, I have a video that demonstrates what it is (seems unused): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4goT9wzAoM

The other is basically the SMB Starman theme that plays during one of Bowser Memory M's attacks (over the battle theme). Like how the starman theme works in Mario Kart. Should these be omitted from my submissions because they loop? (I need to update the pending submission anyway because it's disorganized)

Gauntlet Dark Legacy Resources

I have absolutely no idea what response my topic will garner, but would it be possible for someone to rip assets from Gauntlet Dark Legacy and convert them to Garry's Mod?

There are a couple things I want most from that game such as the maps (Mostly YOUR WORST NIGHTMARE! and The Gates Of The Underworld), plus sound files (I've wanted those for quite some time), legendary items and boss models as ragdolls.
