Favourite Freeware Games

Back in the day I used to sift through the internet for free games, not having money to buy games and nobody buying them for me. Nowadays Humble Bundles and gifts, but there are still a bunch of gems out there that people made for nothing in return. This is where we share those gems!

(This doesn't mean games that are temporarily available for free or demos, but actually 100% freeware. This includes Flash games. Trailers and/or screenshots are welcome if they exist.)

One of the classic freeware games for me is Dink Smallwood. The graphics style is pretty unique, and although the sound effects aren't brilliant, but I personally think they give the game character. It's a bit linear in terms of what you have to do, and certain areas can only be accessed after you continue the story, but otherwise it's quite a nice action/adventure RPG. There's even a whole secret island to discover, with its own little minigame. The story is pretty good, and the humour is so silly it's funny; most of the dialogue options aren't even useful but are great to read anyway. It's quite decently sized, I've never been good with estimations but I'd say it'd last for a good number of hours.
Technically this might not be freeware since the mobile versions cost, but it's originally on desktop where it's always been free and that's the best way to play it anyway.

Mightier is also another great game. Made by Lucas Pope (the developer of Papers, Please) and Keiko Ishizaka from Ratloop (the company behind Rocketbirds), it's a game where to take the role of an engineer and an actionaut. As the engineer, you draw on the level to shape it; either using your mouse or print out the level, drawing, and using the webcam. Then as the actionaut, you navigate the level. It's a really cool concept that I thoroughly enjoyed, so much so that I thought it was too short and made a sequel mod.

SHIFT is a brilliant Flash game, one that I've thoroughly enjoyed, as well as its sequels. A very good puzzle-platformer with a unique mechanic. It's been an inspiration for one of my game ideas that I still plan to make. The humour is also pretty great.
Like Dink Smallwood this also has mobile versions that cost, but I think the original desktop versions are probably the best.

That's about it for now. I might post any other notable ones I remember.
