So when I first heard about Mushroom Kingdom Fusion, it got me really excited. "All these video game heroes in one Mario-styled adventure?" it sounded like a dream-come-true! Then I actually saw the game. "Oh... man." It was a mess of mismatched sprites and themes that went all over the place. Even the gameplay seemed like a mess. Characters would play like how they would in their games but in Mario levels. Which sounds awesome on paper, but doesn't really work out when you actually try to do it.
I always wondered with more structured gameplay mechanics and coherent sprites, it could be an amazing game!
Recently when Mario Maker came out, my interests in such a game rekindled. I started messing about a bit. I wanted to see how Link would look and play in a Mario game. I figure it would work like this:
Small Link: When Link is small he is unable to break brick blocks (just like Mario) so that means he can't use his sword in this form. He's limited to running, jumping, and holding objects (like shells). However, when standing still, he can still use his shield to protect himself from projectiles.
Big Link: After getting a Mushroom, in this form he can break blocks with his head. In addition to that, he can use his sword to break blocks in front of him and attack enemies. He can break blocks below him with his sword by pressing down while in the air. He can also use this skill to hop on spiked enemies.
Fire Arrow Link: A Bow appears instead of a Fire Flower. Link dresses in red and shoot straight moving arrows that have the same effect on enemies as Mario's fireballs.
Ice Boomerang Link: An Ice Boomerang appears instead of an Ice Flower. Link dresses in blue and throws a boomerang that travels a very short distance but has the same effect on enemies as Mario's iceballs.
Cape Link: A Cape appears instead of a Leaf. Link dresses in purple and wears a white cape. Link can jump higher and slowly descend to the ground. Given enough running speed, Link can fly!
Ahem. Anyway, I'll be doing more with Link and then hopefully work on some other Nintendo characters. Stay tuned.
